Where ponds hold water around here, and where they do not
The ground between the Pend Oreille River and the benches above it changes fast. River-bottom sand and silt near Newport, Usk, and Cusick drains like a colander; a pond dug in it fills in spring and drops through summer as the water table falls. The clay pockets and hardpan on the benches and lower slopes are a different story: dig into tight clay and the hole holds water on its own. Rocky ground on the hillsides toward Blanchard and Spirit Lake is somewhere in between, and often the answer there is a liner. We do not guess. On the site walk we dig a test hole or two with the excavator, look at what comes up, and if there is any doubt we leave the hole open for a week after a rain to see whether it holds. That one hole tells you more than any soil map.
- Tight clay or hardpan: the best case. A compacted clay bottom can hold water with no liner.
- Sand, gravel, or cobble: the pond will leak unless it is lined or the water table sits high enough to feed it.
- Mixed ground with a rock shelf: often a liner, sometimes a clay blanket over the leaky spots.
- A wet spot or spring: promising, but seasonal springs can dry up in August. We want to know how it behaves in late summer before we count on it.
Farm ponds and water features are different jobs
A farm pond is dug for volume and a gentle bank. Livestock need a shallow slope in at least one spot so they can drink without sliding in, and a pond that is shallow everywhere grows weeds and warms up. A backyard water feature is shaped for how it looks from the porch: a defined edge, shelves at different depths for plants, and a spot for a pump or a small waterfall. The machine work overlaps, but the shaping is different, so tell us which one you want before we quote it. Fire protection ponds and irrigation ponds are their own conversation about depth and draw-down, and we go through that with you on site.
Spoils, overflow, and the liner question
Every pond makes a pile. Even a modest pond produces more dirt than people expect, and it has to go somewhere. The usual answers are building up the downhill bank as a berm, filling a low spot elsewhere on the property, or spreading it as fill for a future pad. If you have no place for it, we haul it out with the dump truck. Overflow is the part most people forget. Every pond needs a planned low point on the rim, away from the house and the septic drainfield, so that when a spring melt overfills it, the water leaves where you chose instead of cutting through the bank. We build that spillway into the grade and armor it with rock where it needs it. On the liner question: natural clay costs less and looks better, but it only works when the soil is right. A liner works in almost any soil, adds material cost, and needs a clean bed with no sharp rock. Both are options. We will tell you which one the test hole points to, and we will not promise a clay pond holds water until we have seen the clay.
What goes wrong with ponds
Ponds fail in a few predictable ways. Dug in sand with no liner, the water drops a little every day in July. Dug with a steep bank, the bank sloughs in the first winter and the pond gets smaller and shallower. No spillway, and the first big melt cuts a channel through the low side and takes the water with it. Spoils piled on the uphill side wash back in. A drainfield too close, and a full pond raises the water table under it until the septic stops draining. We plan around all of these before the first bucket comes out.
What drives the cost
We quote every pond from a site walk and a test hole. These are the things that move the number.
- Size and depth. Cubic yards moved is the biggest single factor, and depth grows the volume faster than surface area does.
- Soil. Clay shapes clean and stays put; rock and cobble slow the digging and may need a liner bed.
- Liner or no liner. A liner is a material cost plus the labor to bed it and hold the edges.
- Where the spoils go. Spread on site is cheapest; trucked off adds loads and a fill-site fee.
- Access. A pond in an open pasture is one thing; a pond behind the house through a gate is another, and the dump buggy is what makes tight access work.
- Spillway and overflow work, and any rock armoring.
- Water source. Gravity fill from a ditch or spring, a well, or rain only, each changes how we shape it.
When we would talk you out of it
- A pond on river-bottom sand near the Pend Oreille with no budget for a liner. It will fill in April and be a mud flat by August. We would suggest a lined pond, or a smaller lined water feature, instead.
- A pond close to a septic drainfield or the well. Standing water can raise the water table under the drainfield and cause it to fail. Check with Northeast Tri County Health District or Panhandle Health District on setbacks; we will flag the distance on the site walk.
- A lake-sized pond or a dammed stream. A mini excavator and a dump buggy are the right tools for a farm pond or a backyard feature and the wrong tools for a project that needs an engineer and a dam permit. We will say so and point you toward a larger outfit.

How do I know if my ground will hold a pond?
Dig a test hole and watch it. Tight clay or hardpan usually holds water on its own; sand, gravel, and cobble drain, and a pond in them needs a liner or a high water table feeding it. We dig a test hole on the site walk and, when the answer is not obvious, leave it open through a rain to see what it does.
How deep should a farm pond be?
Deep enough in one area that it stays cool and does not choke with weeds, with a gentle slope in at least one spot where animals can reach the water safely. The right depth depends on what the pond is for and how it fills, so we size it on the site walk instead of quoting a number that fits every pond.
Do I need a permit to dig a pond?
Sometimes. A small pond on private ground away from any stream or wetland is often simple, but anything near a creek, a wetland, a septic drainfield, or the property line can bring rules with it. Check with Pend Oreille County Community Development on the Washington side or Bonner County Planning in Idaho, and we will tell you on the site walk which questions to ask.
Where does all the dirt go?
On site whenever it can. The spoils from a pond make a good berm on the low side, fill for a low spot, or a base for a future pad. If there is no room for it, we load it into the dump truck and haul it off. We settle where it goes before we dig, because a pile in the wrong place washes back into the pond.
Should I use a liner or natural clay?
It depends on the soil. Natural clay costs less and looks better, but it only works where the ground is tight enough to hold water, which we check with a test hole. A liner works in almost any soil, costs more in material, and needs a clean bed free of sharp rock. We give you both as options once we have seen the hole.
